Obituary

Martha Landis Blank, 92, wife of the deceased Harvey (Yuppie) Blank, Jr., died on January 13, 2021 in her residence at Souderton Mennonite Home. Daughter of Levi and Fannie Clemens Landis, she was born on October 12, 1928 near Lederach, PA, with her twin sister Mary. In the local Pennsylvania Dutch dialect the girls were referred to as "Die Zwilling."

Martha and Mary attended the one-room public school beside the Salford Mennonite Meetinghouse until its 1936 closure, and then transferred to Lower Salford Township's new Consolidated School. At age 14 they were baptized in the Salford Mennonite congregation as part of a group of ten.

On May 14, 1949, in a dual outdoor wedding on the Landis farm on Landis Road, the sisters married Franconia Township farm neighbors–Mary to Walter Clemens and Martha to Harvey (Yuppie) Blank, Jr. Martha and Harvey lived in his parents' farmhouse for a decade and had four sons while there. In 1959, the family moved to the house on Cherry Lane, Souderton, where Martha would live for over 50 years. In 2012, Martha moved into her residence at the Souderton Mennonite Homes.

After working for a time in the Philadelphia markets for Longacre's Poultry, Martha was a long-time employee in the Sales Department at their Franconia Square location, where her brothers Levi and Abe were also longstanding employees. Taking orders and setting up deliveries put her in touch with customers as far away as Hong Kong, with Chick-fil-A long before it became famous, and with Frank Perdue the founder of Perdue farms. She enjoyed the atmosphere at Longacre's, and was respected by her fellow employees as well as her customers.

As a "people person", Martha and Harvey were active for decades with the Souderton Fire Company. She was a lifetime member of the Souderton Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary and served as president for several years. She enjoyed sewing circle at Salford Mennonite Church. After retiring from Longacre's, she worked for eight years at Salford's Childcare Center. She volunteered regularly at the Mennonite resource center and the Care & Share thrift shop, and also helped serve at banquets held at Christopher Dock High School. Always a lover of games, Martha belonged to several card clubs. While still able to, she would volunteer at the front desk at Souderton Mennonite Home and was always willing to spend time with residents there who did not receive regular visitors.

Martha was preceded in death by her siblings Levi (whose wife Lorraine still resides at the Souderton Mennonite Homes), Sarah Landes, Abram, Susan Frankenfield, and twin Mary Clemens. She is survived by her younger sister Elizabeth (Libby) Musselman. All of her sons also survive her: Harvey Gene (Jean) of Harleysville, PA; Phillip of Souderton, PA; Rodney (Sharon) of Lolo, MT; and Robert Steven (Lory) of Souderton, PA. Her four grandchildren include Stephanie Blank (Shain) of Billings, MT; Travis Blank (Stephanie) of Tioga, ND; Megan Blank (Jesse Rohrer) of Harrisonburg, VA; and Micah Blank of Perkasie, PA. Her three great-grandchildren are Grayson Blank of ND, and Lucy and Ian Rohrer of Virginia.

The family is requesting any donations should be given to the Souderton Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary at P.O. Box 64371, 266 North Second Street, Souderton, PA  18964.
