Obituary

Waldo Latshaw Johnson, 94, passed away on May 23rd, 2023 at Lutheran Community at Telford.  He was the loving husband of Lena (Schultz) Johnson with whom he celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary on March 31st.

Born in Pottstown, PA, he was the son of the late Rolland G. and Lola (Latshaw) Johnson.  He was a 1946 graduate of Boyertown High School and then attended Mercersburg Academy for one year followed by four years at Princeton University where he graduated in 1951.  After graduation he served in the U.S. Army for two years in Germany where he used his German language skills to do intelligence work.  After his military service, he and his wife settled in Lansdale, PA.

In 1954, he joined the Insurance Company of North America in Philadelphia, PA as a trainee in claim management.  Although his company later became part of Cigna Corp., he held a variety of claim management positions which required extensive travel throughout the United States which he enjoyed.  During his more than 35 years with the company, he served on several committees of the International Claim Association and was a member of and served one term as president of the Life and Health Claim Association of Philadelphia.  He retired in 1990 but continued to do consulting work for Cigna for several more years.

Throughout his life, Waldo gave generously of his time to his family, community and the Lansdale Schwenkfelder Church.  He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Lansdale for more than 25 years and served as its president in the mid-1980's.  He also was a member of the Lansdale Planning commission for several years.  At Lansdale Schwenkfelder Church he contributed heavily in a variety of roles over the years including serving on the church board and as a Vice-Moderator as well as church school superintendent and teacher.  In his later years he devoted a great deal of time engaging in his passion for history doing genealogical research at the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center in Pennsburg, PA where he served on the board and as a volunteer.

In retirement, Waldo enjoyed extensive travel along with many winters in Florida with his wife Lena.  He enjoyed his weekly golf game with friends and was an avid lifelong Philadelphia Phillies fan with an encyclopedic knowledge of baseball.  He was an avid reader particularly of history.  He loved spending time with his family to whom he was an exemplary role model of discipline, integrity, scholarship and compassion.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Richard B. Johnson and his wife Irene of Pittsburgh, PA, Thomas E. Johnson and his wife Sabine of Lansdale, and Anne Johnson of Lansdale as well as five grandchildren and five great grandchildren, of which he was very proud.
