October 25, 1933 – December 4, 2025
Sterling M. Eckert, formerly of Quakertown, PA, passed away Thursday, December 4, 2025, at LifeQuest Nursing Center, Quakertown. He was 92.
He was the loving husband of 62 years of the late Carolyn Irene (Forry) Eckert until her passing on February 12, 2025.
Born in Lehigh Township, PA, he was the son of the late Willard and Lillian (Schoenly) Eckert. A 1951 graduate of Hilltown High School, Hilltown, PA, he attained his Associate's Degree in Drafting from Penn State University in 1969.
He was a proud U. S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War, having served with NORAD and was stationed in Greenland and Newfoundland throughout his enlistment.
Mr. Eckert was employed as a drafting engineer for Mack Trucks, Allentown, PA, where he designed trucks from 1968 until retiring in 1999. Earlier, he worked for the former U. S. Gauge, Sellersville, PA, during the 1960's.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kellers Church, PA, where he served as the Head Usher for over 30 years, taught Adult Sunday School, was active with the Church Renovations & Organ Procurement Committee, and volunteered on the Sound Board. He served as President of the Lutheran Brotherhood Fraternal Organization for 10 years during the 1980's and 1990's.
A member of the American Legion Post No. 242, Quakertown, PA, Mr. Eckert volunteered with his High School Reunion Committee. He once earned the distinction of the State Champion Egg Candler with the Future Farmers of America. An enthusiastic supporter of Penn State Football, he also frequently attended Philadelphia Phillies games as an avid fan. In his free time he enjoyed woodworking, gardening and working on his cars.
He is survived by two sons, Sterling Mark Eckert, II, and his wife Kelly, of Lansdale, PA, and Dr. Daniel Stephen Eckert and his wife Jennifer, of York, PA; ten grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew, Molly, Grace, Jason, Noah, Jevin, Jayla, James and George; a brother, John Eckert and his wife Sandra, of Bentonville, AR; and two sisters, Janet Gruver, of Telford, PA, and Susan Petticoffer, of Sellersville, PA. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Jean Eckert, Kathryn Bolig, Kathleen Herstine, Mary Ellen Hager and Janice Myers; two brothers, Emanuel Eckert, and Willard Eckert in infancy; and an aunt, Nina Swindells.
His Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Kellers Church), 3668 Ridge Road, Perkasie, PA, where family and friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment with military honors will follow in Kellers Church Cemetery, Kellers Church, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3668 Ridge Road, Perkasie, PA 18944.
Arrangements are by the Suess-Gahman Funeral Home & Crematory, 606 Arch Street, Perkasie, PA.
