Obituary

Robert "Bob" W. Thompson, of Warrington, PA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on April 2, 2025. He entered into the presence of the Lord at the age of 84.

Bob was the loving husband of Patricia (Underwood) Thompson. The couple celebrated their 63rd Wedding Anniversary on October 31, 2024.

Born in Abington, PA, he was the son of the late Wilhelmina (Tebo) Thompson, and the late William Thompson and stepson of the late Myrtle "Mickey" Thompson. He was a 1958 graduate of Abington High School, Abington.

He proudly served with the U. S. Army Reserves from 1961 to 1966.

Bob had a passion for electricity, leading him to study electrical technology at Spring Garden Institute of Philadelphia, PA and to a career with the Philadelphia Electric Company spanning 35 years, retiring in 1995. Starting as a lineman, he was promoted on to office jobs of dispatching, estimating, and eventually electric utility planning for road and commercial development projects.

He was a spiritual man, being of English Quaker heritage. He was raised Lutheran and upon establishing the family home in Warrington in 1965, started attending St. Paul's United Methodist Church, located in the new planned development of Palomino Farms. He would be a member the rest of his life, serving as a Trustee, caring for the building and grounds, singing in the church choir, and belonging to the men's Bible study group.

Always athletic, Bob was a track runner in high school and an excellent roller/ice skater. In his younger years he enjoyed participating in bowling leagues and with competitive softball teams. He loved racket sports, often playing tennis and badminton with his kids. He enjoyed horseshoe throwing so much, he has his own horseshoe pits at home. After retiring he could regularly be found on the golf course.

Bob was active and supportive of the Boy Scouts of America over most of his life. As a youth he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and the even harder Explorers Silver Award. He was able to travel across the country by train as a teen to attend the Boy Scout National Jamboree in 1953 at Irvine, California. He also attended the Jamboree in 1957 at Valley Forge, PA. As an adult he volunteered as a Cub Scout Leader and then Boy Scout Leader for unit 172 in Warrington. He was also a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. His enthusiasm for scouting led to his son and two grandsons becoming Eagle Scouts as well.

An outdoors enthusiast, Bob road-tripped across the country three times with his children trying to hit every National Park they could. The family heavily utilized their Grumman canoe to explore nature in local rivers and creeks. He loved camping, regularly traveling around the east coast with the family travel camper. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting deer as well as birding with his dog Tally. As a child he was known to bring snakes and critters home, and even raised a fox as a pet.

Later in life, he and his wife were avid bird watchers, meandering the US according to migration patterns and pursuing rare bird sightings. Attracted to both mountains and beaches, Bob and the family enjoyed weekend trips to the Poconos and down to the Jersey Shore. He was especially fond of traveling in general, having visited 49 of the 50 States in America, most of the provinces of Canada, Mexico, and several countries in the Caribbean. Enthusiastic about his family history, he traveled to Rawdon England to investigate his family's Quaker Meeting, woolen manufacturing mills, and homesteads.

Bob was a man of many interests and talents. He loved British racing motorcycles, owning several, but none would ever compare to his Vincent Black Shadow, referred to as the world's first "superbike" and the fastest bike available at the time. He was a certified SCUBA diver venturing into dark and deep Pennsylvania quarries. From being a backyard beekeeper making his own honey, to creating an extravagant model train layout at home, to collecting coins, and designing and building his own greenhouse, he loved to learn a little about everything and to try anything.

Surviving are his wife and four children, Patricia T. "Trish" Benz and her husband Peter, of Bedminster Twp., PA, Kimberly A. Thompson, of Horsham, PA, Victoria L. Ostertag and her husband Robert, of Perkiomenville, PA, and Robert W. Thompson, Jr. and his wife Lisa, of Long Grove, IL; seven grandchildren, Lauren, Peter Jr., Christopher, William, Liam, Ryan and Keira; two great-grandchildren, Hailey and Mark; and a sister, Dorothy M. Labs and her husband H. Howard, of Perkasie, PA.
