Muriel
Zwicker
September 9, 1937 – July 5, 2025
Muriel Ann Guenst Zwicker, age 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at her home in Telford, Pennsylvania. Her devoted and loving husband of 64 years, Ed, was by her side, holding her hand. Muriel was born on September 9, 1937, in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, to Muriel Violet and Charles Henry Guenst.
Muriel grew up in the Erdenheim section of Springfield Township (Montco), just outside of Philadelphia, and attended the nearby Flourtown Elementary School. Time outside of school was spent with her extended family, where her four, maternal first cousins were like sisters to her. Come summer it was off to Long Beach Island to visit with family.
At the age of seven Muriel and her parents moved to Columbus, Georgia for a year when her father was drafted into the Army and based at Fort Benning. After returning home Muriel attended the Wyndmoor School for the remainder of her elementary education. Her middle school and initial high school years were spent at the Hillcrest School. During this time, her family moved up the road to Flourtown, and purchased a second home in Ocean City, New Jersey for weekend and summer getaways.
Muriel was in the first graduating class from the new Springfield Township High School in 1955. While there she was a member of the National Honor Society, the Novelty Chorus, the Glee Club, and the Art Club. Her science class partner would be her future husband, Ed, although they would not date until some years later.
Muriel received a scholarship to attend Beaver College (now Arcadia University) which she would graduate from in 1959 with her Bachelors of Science in Education. She also began working part-time after school at the Friendly Shop in Chestnut Hill, and would continue there off and on well into her later adult years, until the shop closed.
Muriel began her professional career teaching second grade at Enfield Elementary, in Springfield Township. It was during this first year of teaching in 1960 that she met up with Ed again and they started dating. In July of that year Ed proposed marriage to Muriel and she accepted. They were married on March 27, 1961, and moved to Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Over the next decade they would have three sons, Ed, Charles and John, and move first to Wyndmoor and then to North Woods in Springfield Township.
Muriel's vocation as a teacher was also her passion, and during twenty-seven years of teaching elementary school grades, as well as private tutoring, she touched the life of well over a thousand children. She continued to be remembered fondly as the favorite teacher for many, with students stopping by to visit her, send her heartfelt letters, and even wedding invitations, long after they had graduated school and started their own families. Muriel even taught the second generation of some of her initial students.
The one thing Muriel was even more passionate about than her teaching career was her love of family. That included providing an example for her sons to follow as it pertained to the importance of education, commitment to finish what you started, responsibility to help others, and keeping the bonds of family strong. She and Ed loved spending time with extended family at their different primary residences, but especially at their shore houses through the years, first in Sea Isle City and then in Avalon, New Jersey. Muriel's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all those she touched in her eighty-seven years, filling them with wonderful and happy memories that will now last through their lifetimes.
Muriel is survived by her beloved husband, Ed; her sons Ed and his wife Joy Zwicker, Charles and his wife Marianne Zwicker, and John and his wife Jeri Zwicker; her cherished grandchildren Jessie, Faith, Charles, Meghan, Luke, and Declan, and great grandchildren McKayla and Joey; and her nephews, nieces and cousins.
In accordance with Muriel's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, a small family gathering will take place to celebrate her life at a later time.
