Obituary

Marta Šterns (born Mēters) died peacefully in Alexandria Manor, Nazareth, PA on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the age of 103 years and 11 months.

Marta was born on February 23, 1922 in Upesgrīva, Latvia to the late Rev. Augusts and Matilde Mēters.

She was preceded in death in 2005 by her husband Indriķis Šterns when they lived in Allentown, PA.

She married Indrikis Šterns at Priekules Cianas Baptist church in 1943. Then, in 1944, they fled Latvia from the Russian invasion of the Baltic States to live and work in Germany. In 1948, they emigrated to Australia where they started a new life, giving birth to their two daughters, Aija and Silvija. In 1962, the Šterns family emigrated to the USA settling down in Pennsylvania.

Marta was an accomplished pianist and taught piano while in Australia, as well as serving as an organist at several churches. While in the U.S., Marta supported her family working at Rorer pharmaceutical manufacturing. While also working as a homemaker, she created exceptional haute couture clothing for her growing family.

She had traveled the world extensively and had not led a boring life.

During her whole life, Marta also gave charitable donations to help support her family and lifelong friends in Latvia. She was an active member of Bucks County Latvian Baptist Church in Quakertown, PA and dedicated her life to Christ.

Marta is survived by her daughters, Aija Ruta Sterns, of Goose Creek, SC, and Silvija Gunta Tighe and her husband William, of Allentown, PA; and three grandchildren, Augustine Leo Tighe, Kirill Alexander Tighe, and Aija Sophia Theodoti Tighe.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Laimons Mēters, who was killed during World War II.

Her Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the Bucks County Latvian Baptist Church, 1142 Apple Road, Quakertown, PA, where family and friends may call from 10:30 to 11:00 AM.  Interment will follow in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Applebachsville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations for Christian ministry in Latvia written to Bucks County Latvian Baptist Church, memo line Marta Sterns Ministry c/o Bucks County Latvian Baptist Church, 1142, Apple Road, Quakertown, PA  18951.

Arrangements are by the Suess-Gahman Funeral Home & Crematory, 606 Arch Street, Perkasie, PA.
