Mae E
Smith
June 24, 1924 – October 4, 2024
Mae Eleanor (Grasser) Smith, 100 years old, of Telford (formerly Lansdale), Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away on October 4th, 2024 in Telford, PA. Mae was born on June 24, 1924, to Nellie (1891-1987) and Emil Grasser (1889 -1963). She was their second child after her brother, Emil, who was born 13 years earlier. The family lived for most of their lives in West Philadelphia.
She graduated from Olney High School in 1941, and the State Teacher's College at West Chester (now West Chester University) in 1944 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. During World War II, in her very early twenties, she played the piano at the USO clubs entertaining the service men and women. She later completed a Master's of Science Degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, in 1951.
At age 30, she met the love of her life, James W. Smith, on a blind date, and very quickly became matched for life in 1954. One thing they had in common was their strong love of music, which they passed on to many in their family. She was a private piano teacher and played the organ and piano at church. She was gifted with perfect pitch and truly loved music and playing with her husband, throughout her life.
She taught full time at the North Penn School District from 1956 until retirement. She was known for being able to teach every grade level in elementary school, as needed. Most of her teaching was in the A.M. Kulp and Inglewood Elementary Schools. Prior to this, she worked in the Cheltenham School District and various other school districts in Southeastern PA. She loved teaching and was well respected as a wonderful dedicated teacher. She also enjoyed traveling above anything, and truly loved and reveled in her large family.
In the early 1990's, Mae and Jim moved into an independent apartment called Grace Inspired Living, in Telford, PA. They loved their life there and how joyful and playful they felt with their many new friends. The facilities exemplary care, thoroughness and responsiveness helped them move from independent living into assisted living, memory care and finally skilled nursing care where her husband, Jim, passed away on July 5, 2020.
She is survived by her three children, Marcia (Jim) Equils of Laguna Niguel, CA, Linda (David) Hellmann of Baltimore, MD, and Paul (Susan) Smith of Pottstown, PA, seven grandchildren, Shawn (Brian) Sinclair, Douglas Equils, Brandon (Jessica) Equils, Matt (Sarah) Hellmann, Jessica (Joshua) Raley, Kevin (Jill) Smith, Heather (Justin) Hollenberg and 15 marvelous great grandchildren.
