Leroy Herstine,
Jr.
July 22, 1931 – October 5, 2022
Leroy Herstine, Jr., of Ottsville, PA, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at his home. He was 91.
He was the loving husband of Kathleen H. (Eckert) Herstine. The couple had celebrated their 67 th Wedding Anniversary on July 3, 2022.
Born on the site of Tyler State Park in Newtown, PA, he was the son of the late Ella (Fulmor) and Leroy Herstine, Sr.
Mr. Herstine began his professional career employed by Earl Scholl Trucking, Hilltown, PA, transporting milk to the Lehigh Valley Dairy during the 1950's and 1960's. Then, he worked for the Modern Concrete Co., Ottsville, PA, before his employment as a feed mill operator for the Montgomery-Bucks Farm Bureau (later Agway), Souderton, PA, from 1966 until retiring in 1996.
He concurrently worked on the family farm where they raised dairy cows until 1980 and continued crop farming and raising steers for many years.
Mr. Herstine was a member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kellers Church, PA, where he served as an usher and on the Church Council, as well as a Kitchen Committee volunteer serving meals at church functions and funeral luncheons. He also served as a Youth Fellowship Leader, along with his wife, at the Church.
He was very active in the community where he was a member of the Bucks County Farm Bureau, Perkasie Historical Society, and Pennridge Community Center. A former member of the Ottsville Fire Company, he volunteered for Pennridge Meals on Wheels for many years, and, in his early days, with the Bedminster Civil Defense Team. In addition to farming, he was a NASCAR and Indy Cars Series enthusiast who enjoyed playing checkers and tending to his barn cats.
Surviving with his wife are four children, Janet E. Rogers and her husband Douglas, of Perkasie, PA, Carol A. Herstine, of Sellersville, PA, Kenneth R. Herstine and his wife Sandra, of Ottsville, PA, and Nancy H. Leatherman and her husband R. Galen, of Bedminster, PA; eight grandchildren, Matthew Rogers and his wife Nicole, Sarah Garchinsky and her husband Ryan, Scott Herstine, Karen Carwithen and her husband William, Ryan Herstine, Kelly Leatherman, Marie Leatherman, and Greg Leatherman and his wife Heather; six great-grandchildren, Chase, Madison, Emery, Cassidy, Riley and Liana; a brother, William Herstine; and a sister, Lorraine Spier. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Litzenberger, and a brother, in infancy.
His Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3668 Ridge Road, Perkasie (Kellers Church), PA.
Family and friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 14, 2022, at the Suess-Gahman Funeral Home, 606 Arch Street, Perkasie, PA, or from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at the Church.
Interment will be in the Kellers Church Cemetery, Perkasie (Kellers Church), PA.
