Kathleen H. Herstine, of Bedminster Twp., PA, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at her home. She was 87.
She was the loving wife of 67 years of the late Leroy Herstine, Jr., until his passing on October 5, 2022.
Born in Walnutport, PA, she was the daughter of the late Willard S. and Lillian I. (Schoenly) Eckert. She attended the former Sell-Perk High School, Perkasie, PA, before going on to graduate with the first graduating class of Pennridge High School, Perkasie, in 1954.
Mrs. Herstine was employed as an administrative assistant by Premier Bank, Doylestown, PA, for eight years until retiring in 1998. Previously, she worked for the Bucks County Housing Authority, Doylestown. Earlier, she was employed by the Pearl S. Buck Foundation & Welcome House, Dublin, PA, from 1982 to 1990, and, prior to that, she worked as a cashier for the former Benner's Grocery Store, Perkasie, for a number of years.
She was a dedicated member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kellers Church, PA, where she taught Sunday school and served communion to shut-in church members. She also was active with the Kitchen Committee, serving meals and assisting with funeral luncheons. She belonged to the church's WELCA, Joy and Quilting Groups and spearheaded the planning of 90th birthday parties for many church members over the years.
Mrs. Herstine was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau as well as the Perkasie Historical Society and the Pennridge Community Center. She volunteered for the Pennridge Meals on Wheels program for many years. In addition to writing poems and solving crossword puzzles, she enjoyed reading, having read the Bible cover-to-cover many times. She especially loved going on trips to the shore with her sisters.
She is survived by four children, Janet E. Rogers and her husband Douglas, of Perkasie, Carol A. Herstine, of Sellersville, PA, Kenneth R. Herstine and his wife Sandra, of Ottsville, PA, and Nancy H. Leatherman and her husband R. Galen, of Bedminster, PA; eight grandchildren, Matthew Rogers and his wife Nicole, Sarah Garchinsky and her husband Ryan, Scott Herstine, Karen Carwithen and her husband William, Ryan Herstine, Kelly Leatherman, Marie Leatherman and Greg Leatherman and his wife Heather; six great-grandchildren, Chase, Madison, Emery, Cassidy, Riley and Liana; two brothers, Sterling Eckert and his wife Carolyn, of Quakertown, PA, and John Eckert and his wife Sandra, of Gravett, AR; and three sisters, her twin, Kathryn Bolig, of Perkasie, Janet Gruver, of Telford, PA, and Susan Petticoffer, of Perkasie.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, Emanuel Eckert and his wife Bonnie, Mary Ellen Hager and her husband Herbert, Jean Eckert, Janice Myers and her husband Gerald, and Willard Eckert, Jr., in infancy; and three brothers-in-law, Donald Bolig, Craig Petticoffer, and Lester Gruver.
Friends may call Friday evening, December 15, 2023, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Suess-Gahman Funeral Home, 606 Arch Street, Perkasie, or Saturday morning, December 16, 2023, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3668 Ridge Road, Perkasie (Kellers Church).
Her Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the Church. Interment will follow in Kellers Church Cemetery, Perkasie (Kellers Church).
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3668 Ridge Road, Perkasie, PA 18944.
