Obituary

Joan Claire Benner, of West Rockhill Twp. and formerly of Harleysville, PA, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2023, at her home.  She was 90.

She was the loving wife of Joel B. Benner, Jr.  The couple had celebrated their 68 th Wedding Anniversary on April 25, 2022.

Born in Harleysville, she was the daughter of the late Milton K. and Elmina (Scheetz) Alderfer.  She was a 1951 graduate of Souderton Area High School, Souderton, PA.

While her husband was serving in the Armed Forces, Mrs. Benner worked at the former Frosty Cup, Souderton.  Next, she was employed for eight years with the former Harleysville National Bank before working for the Georgia Railroad Bank for a year.  Then, she began her 30-year career as a bookkeeper working in the family business, Joel B. Benner, Inc.

She was a member of St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sellersville, PA.

Mrs. Benner was active with the Girl Scouts of America as a young girl.  In later years, she loved to travel, particularly to Key West and the family's homes in Stone Harbor, NJ, and on the Chesapeake Bay.  Along with her husband, she enjoyed socializing with friends especially at Busch's Seafood Restaurant in Sea Isle City, NJ.  An avid reader, she was fond of "processing" the garden crops, solving jigsaw puzzles and playing cards.

A strong, compassionate and supportive individual, she will be remembered for her smile, her laughter and her sense of humor but mostly of her love for her family and especially her grandchildren.

Surviving with her husband are three children, Julia K. Wisler, of Telford, PA, and Joel Gregory Benner and his wife Donna, and Jay B. Benner and his wife Sue, all of West Rockhill Twp.; ten grandchildren, Ashley Bacon and her husband Michael, Sarah Patton and her husband Bryan, Hannah Wisler and her fiancé Max Wundschock, Heather Benner, Thomas "Tommy" Wisler, Jacquelyn Benner and her fiancé Stephen Piantone, Jenna Benner, Tori Benner, Jay B. Benner, Jr., and Joanna Benner; two great-grandchildren Lila and Zayden; and a sister, Doris Wilt and her husband Charles "Chuck", of Dover, DE.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Milton Alderfer.
