Obituary

Regina "Jean" Ann Gallagher Stiles (87) passed into eternity quietly in her sleep on May 9, 2022. She had been a resident of Gwynedd Nursing and Healthcare in Lansdale, PA for the past year and a half after a lengthy hospitalization.

Jean was born on March 2, 1935, to Isaac and Mary Gallagher of Sugar Notch, PA. She grew up in a large family in coal country. She excelled in academics in high school and graduated as valedictorian of her senior class. She also enjoyed social events with her sisters and friends. At a square dance, she was introduced to Jay Stiles. She didn't even like him at first, but he would win her heart and her hand in marriage. They were married on March 19, 1961 and moved to Souderton, PA. Jean was kept busy with raising 3 boys (Jay, Joseph, and Gary) all born within 4 years. She had a houseful through the years as she babysat for several neighboring families. And later on, she did much babysitting of her grandchildren. All of her life she would have a special love for babies and young children. Jean also took jobs cleaning houses and working at local nursing homes assisting residents. She became very dear to those residents as they did to her.

In her leisure time, Jean loved to spend time with her extended family whether on vacation at Wildwood, NJ or at their homes in the Wilkes-Barre, PA area. Jean also enjoyed time spent with local friends that she and Jay would often get together with.

Jean's life was not without bitter tragedy. While in her 30's, she was sick with encephalitis which almost took her life and left her with a profound hearing loss, that would be a great burden to her for the rest of her life. Then on February 9, 1991, her husband Jay passed away suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 55. Jean would do an amazing job for the next 32 years of widowhood. She continued working and managing her affairs quite independently up until the last few years when her health began to decline. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2013, but often joked that she was able to gain weight while on chemo. She was able to beat cancer and have several healthy years before her more recent sickness.

Jean was an active member of St. Maria Goretti Parish in Hatfield, PA up until just a few years ago until her lack of mobility prevented her from doing so.

Jean is survived by her 3 sons: Jay Franklin Stiles, Jr. of Ithaca, NY; Joseph (and Kristin) Stiles of Souderton, PA; and Gary Stiles of Ithaca, NY; 4 grandchildren: Kristopher Giuranna of Hatfield, PA; Jay (and Samantha) Torosian-Stiles of Owings, MD; Rebekah Stiles of Souderton, PA; and Isaac Stiles of Souderton, PA; 1 great grandchild: Isabella Guiranna of Hatfield, PA; 2 sisters: Nancy (and Donald) Smith of Mountain Top, PA and Eileen Phillips of Sugar Notch, PA; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Franklin Stiles, Sr.; 4 brothers: James, John, Joseph and Thomas Gallagher, and 1 sister: Marie Gushanas.
