Evelyn Louise
Gottwerth
September 20, 1940 – October 25, 2023
It is with both great sorrow and great rejoicing that we announce that Evelyn Louise Gottwerth, 83, went home to be with her Lord Jesus on October 25, 2023, at Pennsburg Manor in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania. She died peacefully listening to her favorite hymns and in her last days was comforted with the presence of her family and friends.
Born on September 20, 1940, Evelyn was the youngest of three children born to German immigrants Henry and Lena Struckmeyer in Livingston, New Jersey. She remained with her parents until her marriage to Clifford Donald Gottwerth on April 1, 1962.
Evelyn was a hard-working and committed stay-at-home mother to her four children. She was the primary parent while her husband Don worked long, hard hours, often in multiple jobs, in order to provide all that was needed financially to take care of the family. Evelyn showed great love and tenderness to her children, not only feeding and clothing them, but making sure they were raised in the "discipline and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). All the children not only were told Bible stories during regular evening devotions, but Evelyn made sure that they all were at Sunday school and church every Sunday.
Having four children meant she spent a lot of time in the kitchen, laundry room and in morning devotions, relying on the Lord for her strength and Christ-like sacrificial love. Truly love went into all that she did. In the early days living in Irvington, New Jersey, her children enjoyed the cooking influences of both German and Polish foods, which were common culinary smells in the neighborhood at dinner time. Many of the vegetables that the family enjoyed in the summer came from the garden in the backyard. Zucchini was a staple and enjoyed for dinner as well as her tasty zucchini bread with cream cheese!
Evelyn loved her husband and children deeply. She was emotionally and spiritually encouraged by her closest friends Sens and Elaine, as well as her spiritual family at Trinity Baptist Church in Montville, New Jersey. Trinity provided her and her family the much needed spiritual food that sustained them through both the good and hard times of life. During the latter years when her husband retired from Exxon Oil Refinery and moved to Whiting, New Jersey, Evelyn was a member at Covenant Baptist Church in Lumberton, NJ.
Evelyn is survived by her husband Don (who remains at Pennsburg Manor), her older brother, Frederick Struckmeyer, of Downingtown, PA, and her four children Doreen (husband Howard) McIlwraith, of Perkasie, PA, Dan (wife Deb) Gottwerth, of Elkton, MD, Donna Basciano, of Emmaus, PA, and Carla (husband Glen) Wilking, of Mebane, NC, along with ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her older sister, Rosemarie Struckmeyer, of West Chester, PA.
Family and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Services to be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, November 3, 2023, at the Suess-Gahman Funeral Home, 606 Arch Street, Perkasie, PA. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.
