Ellen (Jungers) Coonan, 98, of Harleysville, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Peter Becker Community of Harleysville, where she resided since 2007.
Ellen was the beloved wife of the late Daniel J. Coonan who passed away in 1997. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was a daughter of the late Pierre R. and Hannah (Dorritee) Jungers. Ellen was raised in the Tioga-Nicetown section of Philadelphia.
Ellen graduated in 1943 from Little Flower High School. She was soon employed as an administrative assistant with the former Steel Heddle Manufacturing Corporation and worked for the Internal Revenue Service reviewing income tax returns.
Ellen resided in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia for over fifty years, where she and Dan raised their five children. In her spare time, Ellen enjoyed her bowling league, traveling with friends, and gardening. Mostly, she enjoyed reading a good book; her favorite as a young girl was Little Women. Her love of books brought her to volunteer at the school library. When Ellen moved to the Maplewood Estates Peter Becker Community in 2007, she continued her interests. There, she extended her love of gardening by volunteering at the annual Flower Show and volunteered at the library on-site. She had many new friends at Peter Becker.
Ellen was a long-time parishioner of St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church in Philadelphia and became very active in the senior citizen group there. Upon moving to Harleysville, she joined St. Maria Goretti Roman Catholic Church in Hatfield and attended mass regularly with friends.
Ellen is survived by sons; Daniel P. Coonan and his wife Patricia of Philadelphia, PA; Michael T. Coonan and his wife Denise of Limerick, PA; daughters, Ellen Allen and her husband Bill of Hatfield, PA; and Mary Katulak of East Brunswick, NJ. Ellen was so proud of her twelve grandchildren: Megan Kranicki, Patrick Coonan, Daniel Coonan, Leah Coonan, Lindsey Prendergast, Michael Coonan, Erin Blanc, Michelle Rhodes, Billy Allen, John Allen, Joseph Katulak and Erica Masterton. Ellen was also blessed with nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She is also survived by her brother John P. Jungers and his wife Anna Mae of Elkins Park, PA. Her son, Joseph Coonan, pre-deceased her in 2011; her sister Georgena Coogan pre-deceased her in 2021.
Ellen's Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at St. Maria Goretti Roman Catholic Church, 1601 Derstine Road, Hatfield, PA 19440.
