David G
Landis
July 9, 1941 – December 30, 2022
David G. Landis, 81, of Telford was released from his physical struggles to be with the Lord on Friday, December 30, 2022 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania - Penn Medicine, Philadelphia, PA.
Dave was one of four children, born to the late Frank M. Landis and Sadie K. (Godshall) Landis. He was the loving husband of Carolyn (Smith) Landis for 59 years.
Dave grew up in Telford, PA and attended Franconia Mennonite School and then Christopher Dock Mennonite High School where he graduated in 1959. While in high school, Dave began a lifelong career at the Main Street, Telford grocery store started by his father. Over his lifetime, he gave leadership as CEO and board chair, collaborating with family members and others to grow the business to five local grocery stores to serve the community. Though he retired from active work at Landis Supermarket years ago, he continued to influence the family business by service on its board of directors and offering advice and encouragement to its many dedicated employees. Dave contributed to the local community by serving on many boards, including Blooming Glen Mennonite Church, both Christopher Dock Mennonite High School & Penn View Christian School (now merged as Dock Mennonite Academy), Penn Foundation (completing 34 years of service in December 2022) & Penn Foundation Trust, Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce (a founding member), Telford Industrial Development Authority, and Choice Books. He loved these community organizations and believed in making a positive difference in the lives of others through his involvement.
For many years, Dave enjoyed playing fast pitch softball, both in the church and industrial leagues. He was a formidable pitcher, leading his teams to many wins. Two highlights were the 1970 Pennsylvania state title he won with Kulp's Nationwide and coming out of softball retirement in his mid-40s to lead a Blooming Glen Mennonite Church team comprised of teammates less than half his age to a few winning seasons. He shared his talent and love for the game after finally retiring from play by teaching the art of pitching to many high school athletes.
A fitting culmination of this passion was the announcement in November 2022 that he would be inducted into the Amateur Softball Association of PA Hall of Fame in March 2023. While Dave thrived on the competition of a good softball game, the life-long relationships he formed with his many teammates were just as rewarding.
Having grown up in the Franconia Mennonite congregation, he was a well-loved and respected member at Blooming Glen Mennonite Church throughout his life after his marriage to Carolyn. He was actively involved on the church board, many committees, on church workdays, in Sunday School, and the general life of the church. Being part of a Christian fellowship was a part of what gave his life meaning.
Dave loved his family and is survived by his loving wife Carolyn, and his sons and daughters-in-law, Scott Landis & wife Charla (Bauman) of Telford, PA, and Jeff Landis & wife Sharon (Fransen) of Sellersville; and four grandchildren, Maddison, Braden, Kate, and Hannah. Faithfully attending his grandchildren's sporting events, concerts, and theater productions brought him much joy.
He is also survived by sister Eileen Brothers & husband Ron of Sellersville, PA, and sister-in-law Mary Landis of Telford, PA, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Donald and Paul.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held on Monday, January 9 at Blooming Glen Mennonite Church 713, Blooming Glen Road, Blooming Glen PA. 18911 with visitation from 4:00 - 6:30 and a service of remembrance at 7:00.
